  18. <p>     With a wolf that eats a grandmother and a little girl who
  19. gets into mortal trouble by talking with a stranger, the
  20. classic fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood reeks of violence and
  21. veiled sexual terrors. But when a version of the story by Trina
  22. Schart Hyman reached Culver City, Calif., last fall, school
  23. officials thought they sniffed something really troubling: an
  24. implied endorsement of alcohol.

  26. <p>     In Hyman's rendering, republished by Houghton-Mifflin in
  27. 1989, the items that Red Riding Hood carries to her grandmother
  28. include wine that, the text says, would "do her a world of
  29. good." Worse, once Grandma drinks some, she not only feels
  30. "strong and healthy" but also displays, in an illustration, a
  31. red nose. Though the book is on the state's list of recommended
  32. reading for five- and six-year-olds, shocked officials (while
  33. not banning Little Red Riding Hood itself) eliminated this
  34. version. Explained spokeswoman Vera Jashi: "We have a very
  35. strong alcohol- and drug-abuse program in the district. This
  36. book gives us a double message."
